Credit Scores and Reports: Employment Screening
Employment screening companies provide information to employers and others, such as non-profit volunteer organizations. They may also be utilized by government agencies to verify employment income to determine eligibility for government assistance.
They may also provide information such as:
- Residential address history
- Social Security Number verification
- Criminal arrest and conviction information
- Fingerprint information from state and federal criminal record databases
- Status on global watchlists
- Motor vehicle and driver’s record information
- Drug and alcohol testing and health screening information
- Non-profit and volunteer activity verification
Many employment screening companies won’t have information unless you authorize an employer or other end-user to obtain a report.
You may consider asking for the name(s) of the employment screening company being used if you are requested to give authorization. You can then contact those reporting companies to fact-check your reports.
You are encouraged to monitor all three credit reporting agencies as well. These may be pulled for employment screening but should have regular monitoring regardless of your employment status. Credit reports can be pulled and reviewed at www.annualcreditreport.com

To find a list of consumer reporting companies, visit this Consumer Financial Protection Bureau page HERE. This page not only lists reporting companies, but includes links with information, direct links to the agency’s websites, contact information and more. Most also offer a free report if you request it and the company has a file on you.
I help people better understand their credit reports and provide guidance. Consistent monitoring can help identify and prevent fraud and identity theft. If you’d like to meet, CLICK HERE to schedule your Personal Financial Coaching session.
